Hapkido at Maximum Martial Arts
Welcome to Hapkido at Maximum Martial Arts
Hapkido is a Korean martial art that is written with the same three Chinese characters as Aikido. Hapkido’s techniques, however, bear relatively little resemblance to Aikido’s. Although Choi Yong-sul is credited with founding Hapkido, it is probably more accurate to say that Hapkido arose from a collaborative effort among a small group of Korean nationals (Ji Han-jae, Kim Moo-hong, Suh Bok-sub, Myung Jae-nam, and others) following the period of Japanese colonialism in Korea.
Hapkido originally focused on pressure-point strikes, joint locks, throws, and falling techniques. Now, thanks to the influence of Masters such as Ji Han-jae, it also includes highly refined kicks and hand strikes. The focus in Hapkido is on gaining control over the opponent through dynamic and fluid movements, often by combing multiple techniques into a single coherent technique. Various weapons are taught, including the cane, staff, belt, and sword. Hapkido is considered a self-defence system rather than a sport, although physical fitness and the practitioner’s Ki (life force) are stressed as integral elements.
